A Plea for Internet Purity

Since the
beginning of the Internet, it has been a whole new world of freedom.
Freedom of thought, freedom of expression, freedom of
information exchange. Unfortunately, this freedom has also
bred literally millions of sites devoted to free exchange
of pornography, posting of adult stories, avocation of illegal
substances, and easy access to innumerable perversions
not suitable to list here.
Even after five
years battling these evils with Internet filtering, I still
cringe when I hear about some of the newest sites and
sexual derision that is so readily available on the
Internet. It's as if every time good
begins to prevail, evil raises the bar.
"But I'm
an honest person, and I think I've raised my children to know
better. Why do I need filtering?" The Bible says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"
(Jer. 17:9) Truly, it
is difficult to know even our own hearts, much less the hearts
of our loved ones. The Bible also warns us to "set no
wicked thing before [our] eyes" (Ps. 101:3). The
smallest seed of lust, such as a luring unsolicited email may
hit you at your weakest moment. The next time it will be
easier to actually look for one of these sites (unfortunately
they are not hard to find without filtering in place). Before you know it, your
resistance to these temptations will be broken down, and you
will find yourself anticipating, sneaking and concealing these
online jaunts.
This story is
not new -- it is lived and relived a thousand times daily by
men around the world. Honest
and well-meaning husbands and
fathers every day are drawn to the Internet for immoral
pleasures. The online "adult" industry rakes in literally billions of
dollars annually. Addiction to these online sexual trysts (both real and virtual)
account for numerous divorces every day. I have known
several pastors personally who have lost their position in the
church due to sexual addictions brought on by the availability
of pornography on the Internet.
